Ohio registered agent comparison table (2026)

This table compares seven registered agent services that serve Ohio businesses, including us. Each row comes from the provider's own Ohio page, read on October 31, 2026. Where a page did not say something, the table says so instead of guessing. We left out formation bundles, coupons, and state fees.

Two patterns stand out. First, four of the seven list a North Canton office, and two of them list the same street address. Second, the biggest differences are not in the legal role, which is identical, but in renewal pricing and in who files the paperwork with the Ohio Secretary of State.

Best registered agent in Ohio, by type of owner

There is no single best Ohio registered agent. The best one is the service whose price, reach, and filing help match how your business is set up. Here is where each provider fits best, based on what it publishes:

  • Ohio Registered Statutory Agent LLC: Ohio-only businesses and out-of-state owners with one Ohio entity who want the agent change filed for them and a team portal at the lowest listed price.
  • Ohio Statutory Agent LLC: Owners who are comfortable filing Form 521 themselves and want a $49 Ohio address with document scans.
  • Ohio Registered Agent: Owners who want a $49 Ohio agent that pre-fills and files the state forms.
  • Northwest Registered Agent: Companies registered in several states that want one national account, and founders using its low-cost formation package.
  • Harbor Compliance: Organizations that want registered agent service bundled with multi-state licensing and compliance management.
  • InCorp: Multi-state owners willing to prepay several years to lower the yearly rate.
  • CT Corporation: Large companies and legal departments managing many entities across many states.

If your company is registered only in Ohio, a single-state agent covers everything the law asks for. If it is registered in many states, one national account may save you time even at a higher price. Our Ohio statutory agent comparison looks at the same providers through the Ohio statute instead.

What does an Ohio registered agent cost over five years?

An Ohio business keeps its agent for as long as it exists, so the renewal price matters more than the first-year price. Here is one entity over five years at each provider's listed prices: the first year plus four renewals, with no promotions.

ProviderYear oneFive-year cost at listed prices
Ohio Registered Statutory Agent LLC$49 a year$245
Ohio Statutory Agent LLC$49 a year$245
Ohio Registered Agent$49 a year$245
Northwest Registered Agent$125 a year$625
Harbor Compliance$99 first year$735
InCorp$129 a year$645 paid yearly, or $435 prepaid
CT Corporation$436 online price, new customersNot computed; billing period not stated

Prepaying can change the math. One national provider lists rates as low as $87 a year if you pay for five years up front. That is a real saving if the business will last, and money spent early if it won't. If you own several entities, multiply every figure by the number of entities. Our price is $49 for each one, with no tiers.

Local Ohio agent or national registered agent?

Both kinds do the same legal job. A national registered agent keeps an office in every state, so one login covers a company registered in ten of them. A local agent serves one state from its own office, which usually means a lower price and people who work under Ohio's statute every day.

  • Pick a national provider if your company is registered in several states, or if your legal team wants one vendor and one invoice for all of them.
  • Pick an Ohio-only agent if the business lives in Ohio, you want the lowest yearly cost, and you value calling the office that holds your papers.
  • Either way, ask who files the Ohio agent change, what renewal costs, and whether routine mail scans are capped.

We are an Ohio-only agent with one office, at 3416 Erhart Road in Litchfield, Medina County. We do not serve other states. A company registered in Ohio and elsewhere can use us for Ohio and a different agent for the rest; nothing in Ohio law requires the same agent everywhere.

Do out-of-state owners need an Ohio registered agent?

Yes, if the company is formed in Ohio or registered to do business here. An Ohio LLC must keep an Ohio agent under ORC 1706.09, and so must an out-of-state LLC registered in Ohio. An out-of-state corporation licensed in Ohio keeps what the statute calls a "designated agent" (ORC 1703.041). Your home-state agent cannot fill the role unless it has an Ohio address that meets the statute.

Owners who live outside Ohio cannot serve as their own Ohio agent, because an individual agent must be an Ohio resident (ORC 1706.09(A)(1)). That leaves a commercial agent, or a friend or relative who lives in Ohio and agrees to accept papers at home. Our guide to registering a foreign LLC in Ohio walks through the filing itself.

For an out-of-state owner, speed matters more than usual. You won't drive past the office, so the scan, the alert, and the follow-up call are how you learn a lawsuit exists. Ask any provider what happens when nobody opens an urgent document.

What does the yearly price include, and what costs extra?

Two services with the same headline price can cost different amounts once you use them. The common extras are scans of routine mail, forwarding originals, extra users, the agent-change filing, and state fees.

  • Scans: ours are unlimited for every document. One national provider we checked includes ten routine-mail scans a year.
  • Forwarding an original: we charge no handling fee; you pay the carrier's actual charge, shown before you approve.
  • Extra users: add as many authorized contacts as you need at no charge.
  • The agent change: we file Form 521 at no extra charge. One national provider sells it as an add-on with no price listed; another says it covers the state fee in most cases.
  • State fees: always separate, because the state sets them. Ohio charges $25 to record an agent change and $99 to file Articles of Organization (ORC 111.16).

Ohio registered agent reviews: what to read for

Reviews tell you how a provider behaves when something goes wrong. Read the one-star reviews first, and look for three things: surprise renewal charges, slow or missing scans, and trouble leaving the service. Praise for a smooth signup says little, because signup is the easy part.

Check that a review describes the registered agent service itself, not a formation package or a different product from the same company. Then compare the complaints with what the provider publishes. A complaint about a renewal increase means less if the provider lists the renewal price up front.

Our own record is visible on our Google Business Profile, and you can call (877) 908-6122 during business hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET, and reach the office that would hold your documents.

How we compared Ohio registered agents

We read each provider's Ohio registered agent page on October 31, 2026 and recorded only what it stated: price, renewal, Ohio office, who files the agent change, portal and scanning, and any stated limits. Where a fact was missing, we wrote "not stated." We did not use third-party review sites, affiliate rankings, or prices quoted elsewhere.

  • Price is the yearly price for one entity, before promotions and state fees.
  • Five-year cost is year one plus four renewals at listed prices.
  • We are one of the providers compared. We sell the service described in our row, so weigh our verdicts with that in mind.
  • Prices and terms change. Confirm with the provider before you buy, and ask for the renewal price in writing.

Choosing an Ohio registered agent

Who is the best registered agent in Ohio?

It depends on your setup. For an Ohio-only business, a single-state agent at $49 a year that files the agent change for you covers everything the law requires. For a company registered in many states, a national provider such as Northwest, InCorp, or CT Corporation offers one account for all of them, at a higher yearly price.

What is the cheapest registered agent in Ohio?

Serving as your own statutory agent is free if you live in Ohio, but it puts your home address on the public record. Among paid services we checked in October 2026, the lowest listed price was $49 a year, offered by us and by two other Ohio-only agents. National services listed $99 to $159 for standard plans, and an enterprise provider listed $436.

How much does a registered agent cost in Ohio?

The seven Ohio registered agent services we checked in October 2026 listed $49 to $159 a year for one entity on standard plans, and an enterprise provider listed $436 for new customers. Some renew at a higher rate than year one, and some discount multi-year prepayment. Separately, the state charges $25 to record a change of agent under ORC 111.16(R)(1).

What is the typical cost for a registered agent?

Most national registered agent services we checked list $99 to $159 a year for one entity, with enterprise providers higher. Ohio-only agents list $49. State fees for appointing or changing an agent are separate. In Ohio, naming an agent in new articles has no separate fee, and recording a later change costs $25.

Is it worth paying more for a registered agent?

Only if the higher price buys something you will use, such as coverage in several states or a compliance service bundled in. The legal role is the same at any price. For an Ohio-only business, check whether a lower-priced agent already includes same-day scans, filing of the agent change, and logins for your team.

What registered agent should I use for my LLC?

Use one with a staffed Ohio street address that tells you quickly when papers arrive and states its renewal price. An Ohio-only LLC is usually well served by a single-state agent. An LLC registered in several states may prefer one national account. Either way, ask who files the Form 521 when you switch.

Why do some registered agents charge more at renewal?

It is a common pricing model: a lower first-year price to win the sale, then a standard rate. One national provider we checked lists $99 for the first year and $159 at renewal. Since an Ohio business keeps an agent for its whole life, the renewal rate is the number that adds up. Ours stays at $49.

Are free registered agent offers really free?

Usually only for the first year, and often only with a paid formation package. The service then renews at the provider's standard price, often automatically. Read the offer for the renewal amount. The only truly free option in Ohio is naming yourself or another Ohio resident, whose home street address then goes on the public record.

Is a national registered agent better than a local Ohio agent?

Neither is better by default. A national agent suits a company registered in many states, because one account covers them all. A local agent suits a business that lives only in Ohio, usually at a lower price, with an office you can call directly. Both perform the same legal role under ORC 1706.09 and 1701.07.

Where can I read Ohio registered agent reviews?

Start with each provider's Google Business Profile and the Better Business Bureau, then read the lowest-rated reviews first. Look for complaints about renewal charges, missed scans, and cancellation. Make sure each review is about the agent service, not a formation package, and compare complaints with what the provider publishes about price and process.

Can an out-of-state owner be the Ohio registered agent for their own LLC?

No. An individual statutory agent must be an Ohio resident under ORC 1706.09(A)(1). An owner who lives in another state needs a commercial agent with an Ohio business address, or an Ohio resident who agrees to serve and signs the written acceptance. The same rule applies to an out-of-state LLC registered in Ohio.

Ready to name an Ohio statutory agent?

$49 per business per year. We file the appointment or the Form 521 change after you e-sign, scan every document the same business day, and call if a lawsuit goes unacknowledged.

Competitor details come from each provider's own Ohio page and change without notice. Confirm current prices and terms with the provider before you buy.
